For our first quiz of this course, we were given detailed instructions to create a story based on 15 still images we took using a variety of shots, angles, composition and other tools we learned in class.
The way I decided to go about this assignment was to create a storyline that could use all of the shots that were required of me in the instructions. I came up with a rough draft of the situation my partner and I decided on and what shots we wanted to incorporate for this project. The whole point of the quiz was to use one to two inanimate objects (a backpack and a pencil) as “characters” to create a storyline and purposefully use them to convey the tone of our choosing through the type of shots. We came up with the idea of an emotional storyline, that a pencil falls out of its owner's backpack. As a result of this, the pencil goes throughout Cypress Bay High school (establishing shot) looking for the owner again through darkness from being left behind. This storyline then became about the devastating betrayal felt by the pencil (as if the pencil were a real character with feelings).
I think my partner and I did a great job with making each shot, angle, and composition of objects purposeful, especially in the order that they were taken. For example, the Dutch angle used was to show how the pencil landed after the fall and creates more drama to the story by showing the feet walking away in the distance. I wanted to add depth to the pictures, so I decided on editing the colors of shots (passed the part where the pencil is about to get stepped on) to become darker to convey the message better. The overall message we were trying to achieve was the disappointment, sadness, and betrayal one feels when getting left behind by someone who is supposed to care about you.
However, the ending of the storyline could've been improved by adding in a better representation of an establishing shot of the classroom, but we had run out of time to take a better establishing photo. Overall this quiz was a great teaser to the beginning of our learning of shots, angles, and composition. Link to Quiz: Camera Shots Quiz .pptx
